the newbery winners were announced on monday morning along with several other exciting youth media awards. i had the great pleasure, for the second year in a row, of attending the press conference at the ala midwinter meeting (this year in philadelphia). it's really exciting to sit in a room with so many people excited about literature for young people!
anyhow, the newbery winners were especially exciting for me this year since our mock newbery list was so closely aligned with the books the newbery committee selected.
the 2008 newbery winner is:
good masters! sweet ladies! - laura amy schlitz
honor books are:
elijah of buxton - christopher paul curtis
wednesday wars - gary d. schmidt
feathers - jaqueline woodson
congratulations to all the winners and congratulations to the committee!

Hey Sharon,
Just wanted to let you know that my library also has a Mock Newbery Club. It is the Eva Perry Mock Newbery. Here's the link: http://www.wakegov.com/libraries/readersservices/clubs/evaperrymocknewbery.htm. Can you add it to your mock newbery links? The club is not run by me but my co-worker, Martha.
Done and done! Thanks for the link!
Dear Sharon,
This year will be our pilot year for our mock newbery program. I am wondering just how you begin to compile lists for consideration? And, do you have a questionaire/form to guide readers in judging and evaluation? I would love to connect with other public librarians who coordinate mock newbery programs. Thank You, Nan
Nan -
Thanks for all the questions! Why don't you drop me an email at smckellar@oaklandlibrary.org and I can answer from there...that way I can forward you some of the paperwork that I have!
Sharon
Hi Sharon -
Thanks for linking to our Eva Perry Mock Newbery Book Club webpage. Now we've gone and changed the URL! (Sorry about that, it was not our call.) The new URL is http://www.wakegov.com/libraries/reading/clubs/
evaperrymocknewbery.htm.
We would appreciate it if you could update your link to the new URL. Thanks!
